Tweetbot Help
- Gestures and Shortcuts
Tweetbot has many ways to navigate your timeline faster. To quickly access actions for a user, link, or tweet, just right-click on the appropriate element. An action menu will be revealed for that item.
You can also double-click or swipe right to left to reveal the conversation around that tweet. Swiping from left to right will take you a more compact version of the conversation.
- How do I send more than one image in a tweet?
By default Tweetbot uses Twitter's image service. They only allow one image per tweet. You can add more than one image per tweet by changing your image service. Go to Preferences > Account, select your account and change the Image Upload option.
- Is there a fast way to report spammers?
You can report spammers by going to the block/spam button at the top of the user's profile. An action menu will be revealed with the option to report the user for spam.
- How do I view twitter conversations?
You can either view conversations from the tweet detail view or use the shortcut gesture. Just swipe on a tweet from left to right (or right to left) and you'll be able to read the conversation.
- How do I view a tweet's details?
To view details of a tweet, you can either swipe a tweet from right to left or double-click the tweet in the timeline.
- How do I see who retweeted my tweets?
Click on the action button for a given tweet (last button) and select "View Retweets".
- How do I remove tweets from my timeline?
You can delete your own tweets by right-clicking on a tweet or clicking the action button (last button) and choosing "Delete". If you don't want tweets from someone in your timeline, you can either unfollow or mute them. Muting someone allows you to hide their tweets for a specific amount of time and they will be unaware of it. Both of these actions are available by control clicking on a person's avatar in your timeline.
- How does the mute feature work?
Muting is a simple way to temporarily (or permanently) hide tweets from people you follow. When you mute someone, you can select a predefined duration to hide their tweets.
You can mute specific services or keywords by going to the mute tab and hitting Edit, then the plus button.
Finally, you can mute hashtags by holding down on a hashtag and selecting the mute option.
Muting only hides tweets from your timeline. They don't hide mentions or direct messages.
- How location data works
There’s a lot of misunderstanding about how locations work in Tweetbot. There are 3 types of location data and you can choose which you prefer most.
By default, turning on locations on a tweet will choose a Twitter Place. Most of the time this is a City. It does not give your exact location away on purpose. Many people like to provide a location stamp without telling everyone exactly where they are. This default option is for you. But there’s one caveat. If you live in a city/country that Twitter’s Places doesn’t support, it will default to the nearest known city. Sometimes this ends up being in another country. This is a result of Twitter’s Places not having data for where you live. If this is an issue, we recommend using coordinates.
Coordinates is another way to share your location. If you tap on the blue location button, you’ll see an option to select coordinates. This is for people who want to share their exact location. You’ll see coordinates when composing your tweet, but Twitter will return and display the city automatically if it can. It will also mark your exact location on the map. If accuracy is important to you, we recommend this option.
Finally, there’s an option to select points of interest. If you tap on the blue location button, you’ll be able to choose from various businesses or landmarks in your area. Keep in mind the results are limited to the POI’s that Twitter is able to provide. This option needs to be selected manually for each tweet.
Also note on the Mac in order to get location data you must have wifi enabled.
- Marking Your Timeline or Direct Messages as Read
Double-clicking on the titlebar at the top will scroll you to the top of a column/timeline. However you can also double-click on the timeline or mentions tab button to scroll to the last read tweet. Double-clicking it again will scroll to the top. Double-clicking on the direct messages tab will mark all your messages as read.
- What is iCloud Sync? How do I get it to work?
With this feature, you can sync various things across multiple instances of Tweetbot (ex. between Tweetbot for iPad, iPhone or another Mac). Mute filters, DM read status, and your place in the timeline are all synced. So you can always continue reading where you left off between multiple devices. If you need to sync your timeline between other Twitter clients (like Twitterrific), you can change your sync service in the account settings to use Tweetmarker. Tweetmarker is a 3rd party sync service.
Getting iCloud Sync to work properly can be tricky for some. Here are a few steps to make sure you have everything set up correctly:
1) In System Preferences, go to iCloud and make sure you are logged into the service (with the same iCloud account on both devices). Also make sure “Documents & Data” is checked in the righthand column.
3) In Tweetbot, go to Preferences > Account, select your account and make sure iCloud is selected on both devices for the same account
4) If you are using a network monitoring tool make sure it isn't blocking anything from processes "ubd" or "Ubiquity".
5) If you scroll your timeline primarily using the keyboard there's a bug that causes newer positions to be posted. This affects both iCloud and Tweetmarker syncing. Make sure and scroll with your mouse or trackpad occasionally to send the new position.
6) If these notes don't help and syncing is still not working for you please send the following details to [email protected]:
Your OS version, what columns or data isn't being synced, whether you are using Tweetmarker or iCloud, whether it has ever worked, whether you have other devices where syncing is working.
- Tweetmarker doesn't seem to be working for me. What can I do?
First make sure that Tweetmarker is chosen in Preferences > Account for the accounts you want to use.
In order to not overwhelm the server Tweetbot only posts your new position 30 seconds after you've stopped scrolling. It will also send your current position before the computer goes to sleep or when you quit Tweetbot.
If you scroll your timeline primarily using the keyboard there's a bug that causes newer positions to be posted. This affects both iCloud and Tweetmarker syncing. Make sure and scroll with your mouse or trackpad occasionally to set the new position.
- What is the plus symbol in the middle of my timeline?
When there are more than 200 tweets that need to be loaded in your timeline, you’ll see a gap with a plus button. This signifies that there are tweets that weren’t loaded there. You can control which way the gap loads depending on the position of the gap on screen when you tap on it. If you like to read tweets from old to new, tap on the gap button when it’s in the top half of the screen to correctly load without losing your place. If you read new to old, tap on the gap button when it’s in the bottom half of the screen.
- How do I retweet from another account?
Ever see a tweet that you wanted to retweet on one of your other accounts? Just right-click on the retweet button in the timeline or tweet detail view and select the account you want to retweet from.
- How do I post from another account?
Have you ever started to write a tweet and realize you are composing from the wrong account? Right-click on your avatar to quickly switch the account you are composing from.
- Is there a list of keyboard shortcuts?
Tab/Shift-Tab between columns. Space to go up a page (shift-space to go down). Command-up-arrow to go to the top of a view. Right-arrow to see detail. Left-arrow to go back.
Also check the keyboard shortcuts under the Tweet > Action menu as well. The Window menu contains various keyboard shortcuts for changing tabs. The View menu has shortcuts for switching accounts and also opening columns.
- Tweetbot keeps asking me to re-authorize one of my accounts. How can I fix this?
Open Keychain Access. Enter Tweetbot in the search field. Delete the com.tapbots.Tweetbot.AccountTokens entries and then re-authorize your accounts again.
- My global hot key isn't working. What's wrong?
There is a bug in version 1.1 where using the shift key doesn't work. For now use a combination of command, alt/option or control.
- Tweetbot keeps crashing on startup. What can I do?
In version 1.1 there's an issue where the image cache could become corrupted and cause the app to crash on startup. Erasing the cache folder will fix it:
Quit Tweetbot.
Open Finder. type command-shift-G (go to folder)
Type ~/Library/Containers/com.tapbots.TweetbotMac/Data/Library
Select the Caches folder and press command-delete to move it to the trash.
Restart Tweetbot.
- Tweetbot keeps crashing and it doesn't seem related. What can I do?
Please send us your crash reports. You can open an email by choosing 'Help > Request Help' from the main menu. If you then open the Console application and look in the left column under 'User Diagnostic Reports' you should see any crash reports. Drag those into the Mail message along with any information about what you were doing when the crash happened.
